What is IV Sedation?
For many, visiting the dentist can be a terrifying prospect. IV sedation allows us to provide our patients with a level of comfortability that can’t be attained any other way. This is the deepest level of sedation in which the medication is not taken orally or as a gas but directly flows into the bloodstream of a patient through a needle or small catheter inserted into their vein. This is a particularly powerful and fast-acting option, and our patients fall into a state of deep relaxation, allowing us to work on their oral health problems without their nerves, fidgety behavior, or potential gagging getting in the way.
Who Needs IV Sedation?
There is a wide range of people who can benefit from this type of procedure preparation. As much as 15% of the population suffers from dental anxiety and avoids going in for treatment completely. This means that their teeth and gums can fall into complete disrepair. 50% of the population suffers from some fear of the dentist, even if they can manage to make themselves go. IV sedation is a way to get people into our office who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to come due to overwhelming fear or unease. This includes people who have had negative past experiences with other dentists that make them afraid to try again.
This is also a great option for people who have not been to a dentist in a long time and need several procedures done. It allows us to get them all taken care of right away. We can also help those who are afraid of shots or needles, those who tend to struggle to get numb, and those who often gag when getting dental work done. None of these warrants feeling ashamed in any way, and we completely understand. We want you to feel safe in our chair, and IV sedation allows us to give that to you, while it also provides us with the ability to work without interruption. A fidgety or nervous patient may shift inadvertently and can make the procedure riskier. This takes a bit of the risk out of it.
Dr. Aldridge has been using IV sedation for years and will undoubtedly take amazing care of you. Oasis Dental’s number one priority is your safety and health, so we would do anything to make sure that you come in regularly and protect your teeth.
A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
