Should Cavities Get Treatment When Tiny or Should You Wait to See if They Heal?

Posted on 5/10/2018 by Matt Aldridge DDS
Cavities Oasis Dental WA 98683If you see a tiny little cavity appear, should you make an appointment with us or wait to see if the cavity goes away on its own? While it might be small, there's no reason to think that a cavity will heal itself.

Once it has developed, there's nothing you can do on your own to take care of a cavity. You have to come see us, so we can repair it.

Preventing Cavities

The best and easiest way to prevent cavities is to brush and floss your teeth regularly. This will keep the enamel of your teeth strong and prevent bacteria from growing on them.

Coming in to see us twice a year for a professional cleaning and a check-up is also highly recommended. That way, we can deal with any cavities that you may not have seen.

If you see a spot on a tooth that looks whiter than normal, it usually means that the tooth's enamel has started to weaken. This is a sign that a cavity is about to form there.

You can use toothpaste with calcium and fluoride plus an antibacterial mouthwash to strengthen the tooth. This can prevent cavities from forming.

Dealing with Existing Cavities

Once you see that yellow-brownish or black color of a cavity, there's nothing you can do to heal it. Even tiny cavities won't repair themselves. Your teeth simply don't regrow to fill in the holes that cavities leave.

Even the smallest cavities will spread and grow over time if you don't have good oral hygiene. It's also possible that they can expose the root of your tooth, causing you a great amount of pain.

Whenever you see a cavity, regardless of its size, you need to call and make an appointment as soon as possible. That way, we can deal with the cavity before it gets any bigger.
