Oral Hygiene

Oasis Dental understands that there is nothing more important to your oral health than maintaining a strict oral hygiene routine. Dr. Aldridge is here to help you formulate and maintain that routine in a way that will over time bring you a brighter, cleaner, and overall, a healthier mouth. Each case is different, and some of our patients may find that they have specific rules they need to follow to bring them the best smile, but there are some general rules that most of our patients follow to achieve their peak health.

What is Oral Hygiene?

Oral HygieneLike any part of your body, there is a level of cleanliness that must be achieved to promote strong oral health. Oral hygiene is simply the routine that you must maintain to bring that level of cleanliness to your mouth. Oral hygiene is the first defender against tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections. High levels of cleanliness make your mouth a hostile environment for the development of bacteria, which leads to decay and disease.

Steps for Peak Oral Hygiene

There are several steps that should be taken to make sure that you have the best possible oral health. First and foremost, be sure to brush and floss at least twice a day. We advise that you brush for at least two minutes, spending thirty seconds in each quadrant of your mouth. One of these times should be directly before you go to bed. The period while you are asleep, is the period in which plaque hardens to your teeth and bacteria are at peak activity. The other would be most effective directly after a meal, but its timing is less consequential. You should floss at least once a day to get to those hard to reach places between your teeth.

Mouthwash should also be used in conjunction with brushing. This loosens and eliminates any food particles or bacteria that were disturbed by brushing and flossing. Many also provide a protective layer over the surface of your teeth and provide fluoride to strengthen them. A good tip is also to risk your mouth with water after eating or drinking something that is acidic, as it can eat away at your enamel over time if left to sit in your mouth.

Finally, the most important thing that you can do is come into our office at least once every 6 months. Here, we make clean your teeth better than can be achieved at home. We also provide x-rays and screenings to catch decay, disease, and infection before they can become catastrophic for your mouth. We also provide cancer screenings, and as it is with any cancer, your odds are better the sooner it is caught.

For a caring and in-depth appointment, be sure to come to Dr. Aldridge here at Oasis Dental. We will make sure that all bases are covered, and help you to formulate the very best oral hygiene routine for your needs.
A better kind of dental practice for your entire family.
