Brace Yourself! Adults Can Get Braces Too!

Braces are typically associated with kids. Braces are a common orthodontic appliance used for kids starting somewhere between the ages of 11 and 13. However, kids are not the only ones who can benefit from braces. Approximately one million orthodontic patients wearing braces are over the age of 18. At Oasis Dental, we provide braces for kids and adults, correcting your misaligned bite and restoring the health and beauty to your smile.

Crooked teeth (also referred to as malocclusion, or a misaligned bite) do much more than affecting the appearance of your smile. They can have a serious impact on your oral health as well. Crooked teeth can lead to uneven tooth wear and severe jaw pain. You are at an increased risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

Adults may choose to get braces for a variety of different reasons. You might now be considering braces because you could not get them when you were younger (your parents may have been unable to afford them). Perhaps you are getting ready for a big job interview, and you want your teeth to be perfect. Alternatively, maybe, as you started to get older, your teeth started shifting naturally, and you are just starting to experience the symptoms associated with misaligned teeth.

Are Braces Different for Adults?

The benefits of braces for adults are essentially the same as braces for kids. However, there are some considerations that need to be made. Teeth pulled in the past can present problems. Adults are at a higher risk for root resorption. Your bones are naturally harder. Kids have jaws that are still growing and changing, which makes tooth movement easier. Because your jaw has stopped growing (becoming more solid), it can be less forgiving. Treatment can take longer to achieve the desired results, often between 18 months and three years, depending on the severity of your malocclusion.

Adjusting to Your Braces

It will take a bit of time to adjust to your life with braces. You may experience some slight discomfort every time your archwires are adjusted. The archwire is a crucial component of braces. It is responsible for the movement of your teeth into their proper positions. The wire puts pressure on the teeth, loosening them in the sockets and gently guiding them to where they need to be.

Your oral hygiene routine, just as important now as without braces, will need some adjustments. Be sure to brush and floss daily, taking extra care around the brackets and between the wires. Proper oral care will help to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and decalcification (a common issue experienced by those who wear braces).

Eating will also take some getting used to. Moreover, you will need to take care with what you eat. Certain foods can dislodge the brackets and bend your wires. These are both issues that can prolong your treatment period.

Just because you are an adult, that does not mean you should have to live with misaligned teeth. Braces are a beneficial treatment that restores both the health and the aesthetics to your smile. Call Oasis Dental at (360) 836-1100 to schedule your consultation today!
