Invisalign for Teens
Crooked teeth can have a serious impact on your teen’s confidence. Moreover, unfortunately, traditional metal braces can as well. From yearbook photographs to prom pictures, and every snapshot in between, one of the last things your teen wants is to be remembered for their “metal mouth.” At Oasis Dental, we provide your teen with an alternative to traditional metal braces – Invisalign.
Metal braces have traditionally been the treatment option of choice when it comes to correcting crooked teeth. They consist of three major components – brackets, rings, and archwires. The brackets are cemented into place on each tooth at the beginning of treatment and stay put throughout the entire process. Metal rings are set on each of the very back teeth, and hold the archwires in place. The archwires are attached to each bracket with elastic O-rings and are responsible for the movement (and stabilization) of your teeth. While this treatment is very effective, it is highly visible and can cause your teen to become self-conscious.
Invisalign for Your Teen
Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear, BPA-free plastic aligners. The aligners are made from 3-dimensional imaging of your teen’s mouth, which helps to create a perfect fit. When the aligners are set in place on your teen’s teeth, they disappear completely. Not only are the aligners invisible, but they are also removable. However, for your teen to achieve the desired results, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day, and should only be removed when your teen is eating or brushing their teeth.
How Invisalign Works
Treatment with Invisalign requires the use of a series of aligners. Each set of aligners is only worn for two weeks at a time before your teen moves on to the next set. Each new set is slightly different from the previous one. Instead of metal archwires, the hard plastic is responsible for the movement of the teeth. The plastic puts pressure on the teeth, in turn putting pressure on the periodontal ligaments. The ligaments widen, loosening your teen’s teeth. The plastic aligners then work to guide their teeth into proper alignment and hold them steady while the teeth stabilize.
While the typical treatment time using Invisalign varies between 9 and 15 months, treatment for teens usually lasts as long as treatment with traditional metal braces (around two years). Invisalign for teens also takes into account the fact that your teen’s mouth may still be developing, and can easily accommodate the changes.
