Invisalign for Adults
When your teeth are crooked, your smile and your quality of life are greatly affected. They can lead to issues such as bruxism, excessive or uneven tooth wear, and jaw pain (known as temporomandibular joint disorder). They also increase your risk of developing issues such as tooth decay and gum disease. Traditionally, the way to treat crooked teeth is with metal braces. Metal braces are typically associated with young teens, between the ages of 11 and 13. For adults, metal braces can be more embarrassing than having crooked teeth. At Oasis Dental, we can provide adults with a way to straighten their crooked teeth with Invisalign.
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces have been used for decades to treat crooked (misaligned) teeth. They consist of metal brackets, metal bands, and archwires. The brackets are affixed to the front of each tooth at the beginning of treatment and stay in place throughout the duration. The bands are attached to the teeth in the very back of your mouth and are used to anchor the archwires. The archwires are attached to each bracket with an elastic O-ring and are responsible for the movement of your teeth. While metal braces are highly effective, they are not very aesthetically pleasing. For many adults, they can be more embarrassing than not correcting your teeth at all.
What is Invisalign?
At Oasis Dental, we offer Invisalign as an alternative, much more aesthetically pleasing, to correct your misaligned teeth. Rather than traditional brackets and wires, treatment with Invisalign involves the use of clear, BPA-free plastic aligners. These aligners are made from 3-dimensional impressions of your mouth, ensuring a proper fit. The aligners are completely clear, so they disappear when they are placed over your teeth. The aligners are not permanently fixed in place and can be easily removed. However, for you to achieve the best results in the shortest period, the aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours each day. They should only be taken out to eat and to brush your teeth.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Treatment with Invisalign involves the use of a series of aligners. The aligners are changed every two weeks, the new aligners being slightly different from the previous set. They work to move your teeth into proper alignment. The plastic of the aligners puts pressure on your teeth, which then puts pressure on your periodontal ligaments. The ligaments widen, loosening your teeth. This allows them to then guide your teeth to where they need to be.
Treatment times vary from patient to patient. On average, it takes 9 to 15 months to achieve the desired results. Most adults, however, achieve their results in less than a year. Over the course of your treatment, you will go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets of aligners.
